How to Colour and Scent Your Melt & Pour Soap
Colour and fragrance are what turn a plain bar into something special — and with melt & pour soap they’re the easy, fun part. Here is how to get vivid colour and lasting scent every time.
Colouring your soap
- Mica powders give rich, shimmery colour. Mix a little into a small amount of melted base first to avoid clumps, then stir into the main pour.
- Liquid soap dyes are the simplest for beginners — a few drops at a time until you reach the shade you want.
- Add colour to melted base at around 60°C, not while it’s too hot, so it blends evenly.
Adding fragrance
- Use skin-safe fragrance oils or essential oils made for soap — usually about 2–3% of the soap weight.
- Add scent once the base has cooled slightly, just before pouring, so it doesn’t flash off in the heat.
- Stir gently and thoroughly; over-stirring creates bubbles.
Fun effects to try
- Layers: pour one colour, let it skin over, then pour the next.
- Swirls: pour two colours together and swirl lightly with a skewer.
- Botanicals: press in dried flowers or oats for texture and a natural look.
Quick tips
- Spritz the top with rubbing alcohol after pouring to pop surface bubbles.
- Start with small test batches to dial in colour and scent strength.
- Keep notes so you can repeat a bar you love.
